Q & A with Evie

What was the inspiration behind the prints you created for this collection?

It’s a true collaboration, the designers at Moke send me their colour story for the season and some moodboards of ideas as a jumping off point. I was really enjoying playing around with alcohol inks and how they bleed so initial experiments in those led me to create the Purple Fleur design. Night Bloom was another take on a floral but inspired by phosphorescence so they also look a bit like glowing jellyfish so tying the design to water in a more abstract way!

For Big Cat Blur, we wanted to include a take on animal print, so again thinking about water I gave it a blur and a watery feel which makes it a bit abstract. I also gave it an extra twist by adding one of my signature colours - zesty green. I try to think a bit differently for each design so that they each resonate
with a different audience but are equally strong (I hope!).

How did designing for outerwear differ from your usual artistic work?

My work varies a lot but I spend a lot of time working on interiors and interior decor. Designing for outerwear is SO different from this, thinking about how a design will be worn by people, and in what situations.

How the prints look when they’re sewn up, and moving on the body, how the colours appear even in bad weather and how the designs can feel innovative and fresh while fit for purpose are all on my mind.

Did you face any creative challenges translating your bold aesthetic to functional rainwear?

I’m so often thinking in a large scale that I have to remember to adjust my pproach slightly to make prints that work well at the right scale. Bold prints can ometimes compete with the garment's function, but I worked hard to ensure the design wasn’t overwhelming while still making an impact. It’s about finding that sweet spot where the pattern is striking but also cohesive with the jacket’s performance and overall design.

For the designs that are used as linings it’s often that peek of print you see inside the hood and how to make that work as well as when you see it as the entire jacket like on the Georgie packable rain jackets.

If your raincoat designs were a person, how would you describe their personality?

They’re all a bit different of course but I like to think they’re someone who embraces spontaneity with their style, is a lot of fun and likes a bit of adventure. A bit of rain doesn’t get in the way of the opportunity to dress up or have a good time.

What mood or feeling were you hoping to capture in this range?

For this collection I wanted them to feel bold and playful, but with a bit of sophistication thrown in. It’s about having fun with fashion, even when the weather’s less than ideal. The goal was to create something that feels exciting and fresh, but still stylish and practical.
