You’ll see numbers like 5,000mm, 10,000mm and 20,000mm on our rainwear. But what do they actually mean when you’re standing outside and it starts raining?
The number measures how much water pressure the fabric can withstand before water begins to pass through it. In simple terms, the higher the number, the more water pressure the fabric can handle.
But the rating is only part of the story. How heavy the rain is, how long you’re outside and how the jacket is constructed all affect how much protection you get.
Every time a garment is stitched, the needle creates tiny holes in the fabric.
Even when the fabric itself has a high waterproof rating, water can eventually work its way through those stitching points.
Seam sealing covers the stitched seams with waterproof tape or sealing material, helping stop rain from entering through them.
So when you’re comparing raincoats, don’t look at the waterproof rating alone. How the jacket is constructed matters too.
A 5,000mm, 10,000mm or 20,000mm rating describes the waterproof performance of the fabric itself.
It doesn’t mean every jacket with the same rating will perform exactly the same way.
